Backstory
“My Lead, Her Step” came from one very real night at The Westerner. I saw a cute little redhead standing alone and asked her to dance. She turned me down, and I took it the way a good dancer should: no harm done.
Then, almost immediately, a beautiful woman came across the floor, reached for my hand, and asked me to dance. We had an absolute blast. That reversal—from being turned down to being chosen—became the opening spark for the song.
Later that night, another woman I had wanted to dance with caught my attention. We connected really well on the floor, and by the end of the night we had exchanged numbers. The lyrics turn those real moments into one high-energy dance-floor story: the redhead’s polite rejection, the surprise invitation, the chemistry of a great dance, and the bold final move after the music stops.
At its heart, “My Lead, Her Step” is about the mutuality of partner dancing. A man may ask, lead, and create space for his partner to shine—but she chooses to step in, brings her own style, and can change the entire moment. That is what the title means: it is never just my lead. It is her step too.
