Backstory

I've had conversations at The Westerner with women I couldn't actually talk to.

Sometimes I'm dancing with a woman who doesn't speak English. We can't carry on much of a conversation, but once the music starts, that hardly matters. I offer my hand, she takes it, and we find the beat.

A lead is a question. Her response is the answer. I guide her into a turn, she comes back smiling, and then she surprises me with a move of her own. I adjust. She laughs. We figure it out together without stopping to explain a thing.

It struck me that we weren't just dancing. We were communicating constantly. Trust, timing, and humor can pass between two people without a single sentence. I wanted to write a song about it.

I called it “The Dance Is the Language.”

I didn't want the lyrics merely to tell listeners that words aren't everything. I wanted the song itself to demonstrate the idea. That's why it moves through English, Italian, French, and Spanish. The words change, but the invitation stays the same: take my hand, find the rhythm, and we'll work it out together.

And because the song is about dancing, it had to work on a dance floor. I wanted an upbeat rhythm that made people want to move, not just stand around appreciating the message. The chorus needed to be easy to catch, even if somebody couldn't understand every verse.

What I love about those dances at The Westerner is how much you can learn about another person without knowing the words they'd use to describe themselves. You pay attention. You adapt. You share a laugh. For a few minutes, that's enough.

When the music stops, we may still not have enough words for a conversation.

But we've just had one.
